SPECIAL SPECIES

Students experience and learn about the unique biodiversity of New Zealand’s native and endemic species.

Overview: Just minutes from the centre of our capital city, Zealandia is a regenerating natural habitat for many rare native & endemic species. It provides a wonderful context for students to experience the rich biodiversity of New Zealand and consider the impact of people upon it – both positive and negative.

Session Type: Facilitated 2.5 hour session consisting of an interactive indoor activity and a ~2 hour guided walk in smaller groups. With Zealandia Educators the students will:

  • - Experience the Zealandia valley, teeming with the sights and sounds of the natural world.

  • - Witness the dramatic story of New Zealand’s natural history in the Zealandia exhibition.

  • - Encounter many rare & endangered New Zealand species in a regenerating native forest.

  • - Learn about how New Zealand species have adapted to their environment and how introduced species are putting them at risk.

  • - Learn about the concept of a wildlife sanctuary, and how people can work to protect vulnerable species.
